Dragon*Con 2011

During Labor Day weekend, Ben and I flew down to Atlanta to attend our first Dragon*Con: “the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe!”  I had heard a lot of good things about this convention and even watched the documentary about it, so I had pretty high expectations for our experience. I was not disappointed and I’m so glad we went! There were so many people, panels, and events! It’s definitely a convention I’d like to attend again.

Compared to this past Anime Central, our registration experience went much smoother. Our flight arrived in Atlanta Friday evening and we immediately went to pick up our badges. We made it to registration about 5 minutes before they closed for the evening and there was no line! We were so thankful we didn’t have to wait hours in line Saturday morning; instead we got up early and found a good spot for the parade. I was very tempted to join the Venture Bros. group in the parade, but since it was our first year, I decided to watch. The parade was a fun way to see all the amazing costumes Dragon*Con had to offer. Ben and I then checked out some panels and I attended the DC Comics photoshoot as Black Canary in the afternoon. The evening was spent at the Georgia Aquarium.

On Sunday morning, Ben and checked out the vendor booths and then got our picture taken with Tom Felton. Then I changed into my Triana Orpheus costume and got in line for the Venture Bros. panel! After a great panel, Ben and I head to the Pulse Loft to chat with fellow Venture Bros. fans at the Venture Party hosted by Marc from the Venture Bros. Blog. I’ll talk more about that in a later post.

Anime Central 2011

I recently attended Anime Central, known as “Chicago’s and the Midwest’s largest anime, manga and Japanese popular culture convention”. Even though Anime Central will have been only the second convention I’ve attended, I can safely say it is not one to miss. My husband and I had so much fun at ACen that we’re planning on coming back next year. ACen has a great con atmosphere, tons of friendly attendees without feeling too crowded, and there was so much to see and do! I’ve already started planning out my costumes for next year! I can’t wait to get started on them.

The only bad part about our time at ACen was the five hours we had to wait in line on Friday to buy badges. As a result, I spent the majority of the time in my Nel costume in line and it made me miss 99% of a Bleach photoshoot. I suppose things could have gone better if we hadn’t decided to attend at the last minute. I am definitely pre-registering early next year so we can have our badges mailed out early.
